Rare brain infection linked to amoeba leaves NC teen critically ill
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is reporting a rare brain infection in a teen from central North Carolina.
According to NCDHHS, the patient is critically ill and receiving medical care.
Health officials say the illness is caused by an amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater, including ponds, lakes and rivers. The amoeba is not found in saltwater or properly maintained swimming pools.
The infection can occur when contaminated water enters the nose and allows the amoeba to travel to the brain, such as during diving, jumping or other water activities.
The amoeba can be fatal if it enters the body through the nose and travels to the brain.
Symptoms may include a severe headache, fever, nausea and vomiting.
Health officials said the source of the infection remains under investigation.
