Veterans' Glass City Skyway Tribute memorial

Those who have worked hard to make the project a reality say, after years of planning and hard work, they're excited it's nearly complete.

In February 2004, a nearly two million pound crane collapses to the ground, injuring five men and ultimately killing four iron workers. Then in 2007, a platform collapsed and another man was killed.

"It's a very serious occupation and very dangerous, and I pray everyday that everyone makes it home," says Darla Wolfe, whose brother was killed in the 2004 accident. Those working on the tribute memorial are doing it for her and all the others with loved ones in the field.

Cathy Mott Bottom is on the tribute memorial committee. She says, "We hope it's a real asset to the city of Toledo and one of those landmarks that will identify us."

Today, tradesman worked on completing the tribute, pouring the concrete base for what will soon be a 40-foot moving sculpture.

"It's a pavilion almost like a sanctuary and when you view through the pavilion you see the pylon in the distance," explains Evan Lewis, who designed the sculpture.

Construction will continue, with the centerpiece being erected later this month. A dedication ceremony is planned for April 28.
