Durham police make third arrest in 2011 murder

Jimmie Harris Jr., 24, was found shot to death in the 500 block of Canal Street on Jan. 16, 2011. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 28-year-old male was also shot and was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Investigators arrested Demarcus Thomas, 23, on charges of conspiring to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with the homicide.

Thomas was brought to Durham Wednesday from a West Virginia federal prison where he is serving time on unrelated federal charges. He was placed in Durham County Jail without bond.

Earlier this year, two other men were arrested in connection with this case.

Investigators arrested Ricky Rhodes, 21, on Oct. 9 and charged him with conspiring to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with the homicide. He was also served with warrants charging him with conspiracy to traffic in heroin and possession of heroin with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver.

In March 2013, Veshan Chambers, 24, was indicted on one charge of murder and one charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Rhodes and Chambers remain incarcerated in the Durham County Jail.

Police said the murder did not appear to be a random act.
