Many Fayetteville area residents were left in the dark Saturday night following a major power outage.

Officials told ABC11 that the second largest transformer in the Sandhill blew near Cumberland Road and Owen Drive in Fayetteville around 10 p.m. following a fire on a Duke Energy Progress line feeding the PWC system.

PWC electric crews were able to restore power an hour later.

The outage affected about 31,500 customers in the area.
