NC State starts process to tear down contaminated Poe Hall

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Workers started drilling poles into the ground, hammering in parts, and mapping out where fencing will go around Poe Hall on NC State's campus. The building has been off-limits for years after toxic chemicals were discovered in the HVAC system. Now, it's scheduled to be demolished.

"I don't know how many classes I took in Poe Hall, but I took quite a few," said student Alex Currin

He studied Secondary English Education in the building and says he still has concerns about his health.

"(I) go to the doctor, do blood tests. So far, nothing's come up," said Currin.

The university is being sued by hundreds of former students and faculty, who claim their illnesses are related to time spent inside the building.

ABC11 reached out to the attorneys representing the group for comment on the building's demolition. We have not heard back.

University leaders said in an update posted on the school's website, "NC State will fully demolish Poe Hall and construct a new space for our students, faculty and staff in the College of Education following the recommendations from expert consultants."

The university initially wanted to remedy the problem and renovate the building.

"It's definitely good that it's getting knocked down if there are all those toxins in there," said student Jimmy Mullarkey.

The EPA has not yet determined the timing of the building's demolition.
