Cops: Fayetteville driver gave a lift, attacked victim

FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A man who picked up a stranger and gave them a ride has been arrested after police said he attacked his passenger.



Police said that on Tuesday morning, Rufus Rakeem Smith, 35, gave a ride to a 43-year-old stranger in the 1800 block of Tryon Drive.



Smith allegedly attacked the victim when they arrived at their destination.



Smith is charged with attempted first-degree rape, assault inflicting serious bodily injury, and first-degree kidnapping.



Smith was arrested at his home in the 4900 block of Fieldcrest Drive. He is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $375,000 secured bond.
