CARY (WTVD) -- The Town of Cary's police chief has announced she is retiring after 29 years of serving the community.

During her almost three decades in service, Patricia Bazemore blazed a path of firsts.

In 2008, she became Cary's first female police chief.

Bazemore also was the department's first female lieutenant, female captain, female major, and female deputy chief.

She joined the force in 1986, when the town's population was about 32,000 people. It now stands more than 153,000.

Bazemore said she plans to focus on her family, hike, travel and volunteer in the community.

Her last day will be July 31.

A search is underway to find Bazemore's replacement and Town of Cary leaders hope to have a successor later this summer.
