STATESVILLE, North Carolina -- An investigation is underway after deputies said a child shot himself early Thursday morning in Statesville, North Carolina.



Authorities told WSOC that the child was shot just before 7 a.m. on Compton Park Road.



According to Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell, a bullet grazed the child's head, and although he was not seriously injured, he was taken to the hospital.

The child's age has not been released.



Investigators said the child discovered the gun inside a car. Authorities want to stress the importance of securing your weapons.



It was not confirmed if charges would be filed.
