Another gas leak plagues Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- PSNC workers have capped a gas leak that closed Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh in the 4700 block south of Millbrook Road Tuesday.
Officials said a construction crew working to install Google Fiber in the area hit a 4-inch gas line.
Capping the leak took some time because of the required digging.
In a statement, Google Fiber said:
"Google Fiber is building one of the biggest and most complex infrastructure projects in Triangle history. We want to be good neighbors, so we're doing everything we can to prevent unnecessary disruptions and resolve issues quickly. In this case, the problem was promptly identified, both the Raleigh Fire Department and PSNC were immediately notified and crews soon went to work to repair the line. We take all construction-related incidents very seriously, and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused."
About five homes nearby were evacuated.
The road reopened just after noon.
Tuesday's gas leak is the latest in a number of similar incidents in Raleigh.
On Friday, ABC11 talked with homeowners in the Harrington Grove neighborhood who were frustrated after being barricaded in their homes all day. AT&T contractors struck a gas line on Edgebury Road prompting the Raleigh Fire Dept. to send out fire trucks.
Then on Monday, crews struck another gas line in the same neighborhood.
AT&T and spokesperson Josh Gelinas released the following statement to ABC11:
"We place the highest priority on the safety of our customers, employees, contractors and the residents of the communities we serve. Before construction begins, our plans are reviewed and approved by the city as part of the permitting process. We expect our contractors to work with local utility providers and third-party utility line location services and rely on the accuracy of these services to dig safely. In both recent gas line cuts in the Harrington Grove neighborhood, we do not believe the lines were properly marked, resulting in the disruption."
