FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A Fayetteville woman who is due to give birth next week is now undergoing treatment for rabies after she and her 6-year-old son were attacked by a rabid fox outside their home.

On Wednesday, Ashley Kotchetov and her son Alex were walking to the car to get his book bag, when they said the fox attacked them in the front yard.

Ashley fought off the fox with her son's book bag.

"I fought the fox off and managed to get my son to the truck because the fox was between us and the doorway," said Kotchetov. "So we barricaded ourselves and sat on top of the truck for about 15 minutes while the fox gnawed my son's book bag."

Flyers are now posted in the neighborhood warning residents of the attack.

Kotchetov was not bitten, but did come in contact with the fox's saliva when she picked up the book bag.

She said her doctor told her she was at greater risk of getting rabies, than the vaccine hurting her unborn child.
