Halloween Happiness at Tisha's house
Halloween is finally upon us and I say.. "Thank goodness!" Relatives, friends and coworkers have been pressuring me for days to tell them what Nina and Eva are going to be for Halloween, and today we made the big reveal. The princess and the frog finally made their appearance on social media.. a dress rehearsal before the big event that is Halloween night.
At our house, dressing up for Halloween is a pretty big deal, especially for my 13-year-old daughter Nina. It started with her first little devil costume. Countless others followed including fairies, witches, an angel, Cleopatra and more. It seems more of her costumes had wings than not. Glittered fairy wings always seemed to be the perfect finishing touch. They're pretty easy to find at the store these days. When I was growing up, I had to make them out of wire hangers and my mom's old pantyhose.
I wish that I had a picture of one of my Halloween costumes from when I was a child trick-or-treating with family. I remember loving Halloween in my south Louisiana neighborhood. The memory of the excitement in the house as we all gathered together to put on our costumes on Halloween night still makes me smile. They were usually pretty simple. Often a sheet that mom was willing to let us put holes in or a mask with a little plastic outfit from K-Mart that slipped on and tied in the back. It was all in the name of fun and I wish I had at least one picture to hold on to today.
My daughters, on the other hand, will have tons of photos to share with their little ones. I was thrilled last year when Nina came up with the idea to include her baby sister Eva, who was 5 months old at the time, in her Halloween costume. She was Mary and Eva was her little lamb. This year we decided to recycle and a Princess Tiana dress that Nina and I made one summer. I wore it to Troubleshooter Diane Wilson's daughter's princess birthday party. We worked so hard putting the dress together and wanted to use it again. That's how we came up this year's costume idea of "The Princess and the Frog." It's one of our favorite Disney movies.
I'm not sure how long I'll be able to dress my two girls in matching Halloween costumes, but I'm having a wonderful time doing it. Creating happy memories with them has been one of the many joys of parenthood. Nina says the costumes are now a family tradition and each year has to be more fabulous than the last. I'm up for the challenge because it's something we can always do together.. and to me that's what family is all about.
