HICKORY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Residents in one North Carolina neighborhood say they're being terrorized by a hawk.
They say it has attacked nearly a dozen people, and now some won't go outside without protection.
"When I mow my yard, I wear my helmet," said resident Roger Beaver.
"I was right here and it swooped down and it felt like a football hit me in the head," said Susy Morrison.
Several people in the Hickory neighborhood had to seek medical attention after being attacked. One homeowner has been targeted four times.
The State Wildlife Agency says the birds are federally protected and can't be killed or have their nest destroyed.
Wildlife officers say the hawk is most likely protecting its eggs and newborns. Once the baby birds leave, officer said, the attacks should stop.
