MORRISVILLE (WTVD) -- Lenovo, one of the Triangle's largest employers, announced Thursday that it will be reducing its workforce.
The news comes as the PC maker's first quarter earnings were released.
The company admitted they are facing challenges, and said it will lay off about 3,200 people - 10 percent of non-manufacturing headcount and about 5 percent of their total population of about 60,000 people around the world.
About 230 positions will be laid off from their headquarters in Morrisville.
The China-based company also said they are taking advantage of consolidation by becoming even more efficient and reducing costs to ensure sustainable, profitable growth.
Lenovo said to ensure they return to growth across all of their businesses, they are restructuring their Mobile Business Group to align their smartphone development, production and manufacturing to better leverage the complementary strengths of Lenovo and Motorola.
They said MBG will now rely on Motorola to design, develop and manufacture smartphone products.
