APEX (WTVD) -- The Apex Police Department now has an area in the police department parking lot where you can finalize sales of items you buy and sell on the Internet.

The designated area is in the small lot beside the police department and is under 24-hour surveillance. There are two parking spaces designated as an Internet Exchange Location.

"With the increase in people buying and selling items online and through social media we wanted to make a location people could feel safe making the exchange. " Capt. Ann Stephens said.

The lot helps limit the exchange of personal information or the potential dangers of meeting a stranger in a random parking lot and gives an alternative that is public, monitored and accessible.

The video monitors are in the police communications center where telecommunicators are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is constant officer presence.
