Leaders encourage 'Talk It Out' initiative stop underage drinking
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- North Carolina leaders say underage drinking can lead to crimes, injuries, even death. It also costs the state billions of dollars.
During a news conference Tuesday, Governor Pat McCory, Jim Gardner, the Chairman of the North Carolina Alcohol Beverage Control Commission and Duke University Researcher Dr. Wilkie Wilson encouraged the "Talk it Out" initiative to stop underage drinking.
Last year, leaders unveiled a website outlining the negative results of youth drinking called www.talkitoutnc.org. In an effort to urge parents to talk sooner to their children -- particularly middle-school students.
The site gives tips to parents on how to speak plainly to kids about why underage drinking is dangerous, which was considered Phase 1.
Now, the second phase of the campaign includes working with coalitions to encourage parents to talk to their children about the effects of drinking - breaking laws, brain damage and paying for it later on in life.
