MOORE COUNTY (WTVD) -- A pedestrian was hit and killed in front of a Moore County elementary school Friday morning.

On Saturday, the Highway Patrol said they located the suspect and vehicle in the fatal hit-and-run.

According to officials at Moore County Schools, the incident happened in front of West End Elementary School on NC Route 211 in West End before students arrived.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Steven McGregor of West End was killed as he walked to a nearby McDonald's for his 5 a.m. shift Friday.

Trooper Sean Clearly says McGregor's body was thrown into the schoolyard by a fence.

A bus driver, who's also a cousin of McGregor's, saw the body and called 911 about 6 a.m. Cleary says the bus driver didn't realize it was her cousin until she walked with first responders to the body.

No one at the elementary school, including students, saw the incident.

Staff members, first responders and school resource officers were able to route traffic to the back of the school and away from the accident scene.

Officials said additional counselors have been called in to provide emotional support for any staff or students who may need it.

West End is about 10 miles northwest of Pinehurst.
