Raleigh animal shelters brace for end of the year

RALEIGH -- The last few weeks of the year can be a challenge for Raleigh animal shelters because of levels of funding and volunteers.

The News & Observer reports that several shelters have found their budgets tight and fewer volunteers available because of the holidays.

The SPCA of Wake County has seen more dogs needing heartworm treatment. Development director Mondy Lamb says that the group budgeted $5,000 for the treatment but will need to spend nearly $9,000.

The nonprofit SAFE Haven for Cats in Raleigh also says that it has taken in cats that needed special treatments, straining its medical budget.

The county-run Wake County Animal Shelter says it has enough supplies but volunteer help sometimes runs short.
