
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Some of America's best vacation spots are also some of its most unassuming.
According to a new report from travel site Kayak, more travelers want to explore smaller, lesser-known destinations.
Travelers are also looking for more spontaneous trips that don't need weeks of planning.
So, Kayak created a list of underrated travel gems featuring college towns.
Topping the rankings is Clemson, South Carolina, home to Clemson University.
Davis, California, and West Lafayette, Indiana, rounded out the top three.
Chapel Hill came in at No. 4 thanks to its vibrant downtown that Kayak says has something for everyone.
Oxford, Mississippi, home to the University of Mississippi, was No. 5.
Boone checked in at No. 6.
The mountain town is home to Appalachian State University and scored high marks for being a year-round travel destination.
No. 7 is Athens, Georgia. Eugene, Oregon, came in at No. 8, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, ranked No. 9.
Rounding out the list at No. 10 was State College, Pennsylvania, home to Penn State University.
