ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Halifax County Sheriff's Office confirms the search for a man who disappeared nearly a month ago while kayaking on a lake is over.
The body of Angel Martinez was found Saturday in the Roanoke Rapids Lake near where he was last seen.
Search crews had been searching for Martinez after he disappeared on May 14 while on the lake with a friend near the Fifth Street boat landing, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said.
Martinez's kayak began to take on water, and the two men were separated. Someone nearby heard screaming and called 911, the sheriff's office said.
First responders were able to pull the other man out of the water. He was taken to the hospital. Authorities at the time said they didn't know how long the two had been in the water due to the hypothermic condition of the man they rescued.
The Sheriff's Office released this statement on Saturday: "We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the agencies and volunteers that have assisted in the search and provided food and water to the responders and the family of Martinez through the many days of this operation."
