RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Animazement returned to downtown Raleigh this Memorial Day weekend, drawing thousands of anime and Japanese culture fans -- even as rising prices continue to stretch budgets.

Attendees say the annual three-day festival is still a tradition they're not willing to miss, even if it means making adjustments.

"Everyone's really nice, and I'm cosplaying as Sartorial Gold Joe from Jujutsu Kaisen," attendee Johnny Wyatt said.

For many, the convention is a yearly highlight.

"We come here every year, and it's really fun," said attendee Brinna Wright.

But this year's celebration comes as inflation continues to squeeze consumers, with higher costs for everything from groceries to gas.

"Unfortunately, a lot of these hobbies can be very pricey," said attendees Rebecca and Cody Cainale, who noted cosplay materials and collectibles have become more expensive.

Vendors say they're feeling the impact, too.

"We've definitely been down in sales the past couple of years," said Constance, a vendor from New Jersey. "We've had to raise prices on some items because shipping and fees have gone up."

Still, fans say they're finding ways to keep costs down -- including shopping secondhand for costumes and supplies.

"In terms of dressing up, we try to find secondhand stores or look on Facebook Marketplace for pieces," the Cainales said.

Despite the financial pressure, many say the sense of community keeps them coming back.

"Everyone's costumes are great. It's just a lot of fun being in the atmosphere," they added.

Animazement continues through the holiday weekend in downtown Raleigh.
