EDENTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Being the sheriff's older brother doesn't shield you from the long arm of the law, as an eastern North Carolina man recently found out.
Chowan County Sheriff Edward "Scooter" Basnight revealed in a recent social media post that his brother, Tommie Wayne Basnight, who lives next door, is under investigation for drug-related charges.
The stunning revelation came after deputies from Scooter Basnight's office were called to the brother's home on Macedonia Road for a domestic disturbance call.
Tommie Basnight told deputies that his stepdaughter was at the home in violation of Department of Social Services (DSS) directives.
While deputies investigated, they found evidence that led to drug-related charges being filed against Tommie Basnight.
An arrest warrant obtained by our newsgathering partners at the News & Observer showed that Tommie Basnight was charged with felony manufacture of marijuana, felony possession of marijuana with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia, including marijuana grinders and scales. About 10 ounces of marijuana was found at the suspect's home, court documents reported.
Scooter Basnight said he has removed himself from any involvement with the ongoing investigation and has spoken to the district attorney to ensure transparency.
