Concerns over mosquito-borne tropical virus, 2 confirmed cases

Raleigh, N.C. (WTVD) -- Two cases of chikungunya confirmed in North Carolina and now experts at N.C. State are taking a closer look at the virus. A meeting was also held with state agency heads to discuss public safety

The virus originates in the Caribbean. Health officials says it can't be transfer person-to-person, but the Asiantiger mosquito found in this state is a carrier.

The illness brings fever and severe, often disabling, joint pains in the hands and feets. Yesterday, a second case was confirmed in the state. A person is under quarantine now in Alamance County.

The type of mosquito that carries this tropical virus breeds in water. Health officials say there are things folks should be doing right now around the house to protect themselves.

"Make sure your gutters aren't clogged, drain your bird bats at least once a week or just empty them entirely. And make sure you don't have any small objects what can has old water in the backyard," said North Carolina Public Health Veterinarian Carl Williams.

Officials recommend using repellent with at least 20 percent of DEET. They also urge folks who have recently traveled to the Caribbean and start experiencing flu-like symptoms to contact a physical immediately.
