DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Eagle pride echoed across campus as hundreds of graduates crossed the stage during North Carolina Central University's 147th commencement ceremony.
Students in their signature burgundy gowns and white tassels filled the stands, celebrating a milestone years in the making.
For the Ukpabi family, the moment was especially meaningful. Their daughter, Chidimma Ukpabi, earned her degree in mass communications -- a dream she says reflects both personal ambition and family legacy.
"You can't describe the feeling. It's out of this world," a family member shared. "Thank God for that."
Ukpabi emphasized the power of education in shaping her future.
"Education takes you places that you dream to go," she said. "It's very important."
This year's ceremony featured keynote remarks from U.S. Attorney Dena King and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis, who offered words of encouragement as graduates step into the next chapter of their lives.

Among the crowd was another proud family who traveled from Orlando to celebrate their newest Eagle graduate.
"My family is here to support me. I appreciate everything," another graduate said, reflecting on the journey to commencement day.
Even amid the cheers and celebration, many students were already looking ahead. Some spoke about continuing their education, entering new fields or pursuing advanced degrees.
"I will continue to further my degree... go further in my field of broadcasting and TV. I'll go into digital media and social media," Ukapbi shared.
Another student celebrated her acceptance into Howard University's Master of Social Work program.
"I'm not done yet," she added. "There's still more work to be done."
As the ceremony came to a close, the energy on campus remained electric -- a testament to the determination, pride and community that define the Eagle experience.
