WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A crash on I-40 westbound caused a major traffic backup near Jones Sausage Road in Wake County.

It happened around 9:50 a.m. Thursday, after Johnston County deputies responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle on River Dell Townes Avenue. Deputies approached and spoke with a man in the vehicle who suddenly sped away.

A deputy pursued the driver, who reached speeds of more than 100 mph. He led authorities into Wake County, where he crashed on I-40 near Jones Sausage Road.

After wrecking the car, the suspect got out and ran. Nearby East Garner Elementary School was placed into lockdown as deputies searched for the suspect.

Law officers were unable to find the man, but the sheriff's office identified him as 28-year-old Cephus Eugene Jones, of Burlington.

Warrants for multiple offenses await Jones upon his arrest, the Johnston County Sheriff's Office said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Jones was the only person in his car, the sheriff's office said.

NCDOT said the outside lanes were temporarily closed before Exit 303. The road has since reopened.
