Driver killed in crash with train tried to go around crossing arms

CLAYTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A driver was killed in a collision with a train Monday in Clayton.

The crash took place at Central Street between Front Street and E. Main Street, near the Clayton Post Office.

Clayton Police said it happened about 10:50 a.m. when a 2012 Toyota Corolla made a left turn off E. Main Street onto Central Street and tried to go around the crossing arms, which were down in both directions. Lights were flashing at the time, police said.

The eastbound Norfolk Southern cargo train hit the driver's side of the car. The Corolla then rolled and was dragged about 300 feet from the crash site.

The driver who was killed was identified as Dwayne Alton Bryant, 62, of Clayton. No one on the train was injured.

The crash remains under investigation and was caught on Clayton Police traffic cameras.

It happened in the same area where a 21-year-old college student was killed in early August. Ellaryan Marie Miller of Wendell, died at the scene.

Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart said investigators determined Miller, a student at UNC-Wilmington, was leaving her summer internship job in Clayton when she crossed the railroad tracks and was hit by the train.

Miller was walking to her car, which was in a parking lot on Front Street.
