Dog shot while biting Durham armed robbery suspect, teen charged

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- One person is under arrest after a dog was shot during an armed robbery on Sunday evening, the Durham County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

It happened just after 11:45 p.m. when two masked people approached two men on a front porch in the 2500 block of E. Club Boulevard. One of the robbers, who had a handgun, demanded a cell phone from one of the men.

After the phone was handed over, a dog belonging to one of the two men charged at the robbers and bit one of them on the leg. The other suspect then shot the dog before he and his accomplice ran away.

A short time later, two people matching the description of the robbers were spotted outside the Walmart on Glenn School Road.

When deputies approached them, one of the suspects tried to run but was caught by deputies. The suspect had a leg wound consistent with a dog bite, the sheriff's office said.

That suspect was determined to be a minor, and after being treated on the scene by EMS, he was released to a parent.

The second suspect was found to have a firearm. The sheriff's office identified him as Isiah Holeman, 18, of Durham.

Holeman was arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony larceny, possession of stolen goods, carrying a concealed gun, going armed to the terror of the people, assault by pointing a gun, and cruelty to animals.

Holeman was taken to the Durham County Detention Center, where he was denied bond and remains in custody.

The dog survived and was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.

The case remains under investigation, the sheriff's office said.
