Has MLK's dream been achieved?

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- It's been more than 60 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.

There were a number of events celebrating his legacy Monday. Eyewitness News asked people if his dream has been achieved.

"I think if he were here, there are pockets he'd be proud of. There are other pockets he'd wonder how we've taken steps back," said DeVaughn Murph.

Dr. King's dream was heavy on the hearts and minds of parade participants.

"Our community is crying out for peace. You can see that from D.C. to the monks walking and things like that," said Lashena Washington.

Inside the John Chavis Center, Joni Craven was leading arts and crafts with kids creating dream clouds. She showed off hers.

"I wrote that I have a dream that we can live together without hate," she said.

Rachel Barkley brought her 2-year-old son out to commemorate the day. While he's too young to understand Dr. King's message, she's hopeful moments like this allow him to see the beauty in all people.

"There's some darkness in our own family history. That doesn't define him. What's going to define him is can he be kind to other people? If I can teach him that then I think that puts us a little closer to Dr. King's dream," she said.

In Durham, there was a march in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. Residents united for a day of action along West Chapel Hill Street.

"I think he would say we need to do more. We need to come together. We need to love one another and show mercy and grace to each other," said Pebbles Lucas.
