RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Many are remembering Dr. Richard Jewell, the longtime principal at Broughton High School in Raleigh.
Jewell, a native of Lottsburg, Virginia, died Sunday at his home. He was 96 years old.
He began his leadership at Broughton in 1970, leading the school through integration, taking the job after working on his doctorate at Duke University in 1969.
He served as principal for 22 years.
During his tenure, Broughton was awarded several national recognitions, including being cited as a US School of Excellence in 1984.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Irene, his two daughters and six grandchildren, as well as eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held next Tuesday at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, where he was an active member for more than 55 years.
