CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A large water main break in Cary has now led to early dismissal for a number of schools in the area as a precaution.

Crews closed part of NC 55 and have been working to repair it since early Monday morning.

School leaders issued this statement about early dismissals of dozens of schools: "This decision was made out of an abundance of caution and due to the large number of schools affected. After-school activities will be at the discretion of individual school leaders."

Additionally, Cary has temporarily closed spraygrounds and water fountains.

Cary Town officials say only one customer is without water, however, roughly 50,000 customers are within the system pressure advisory. This means water customers are recommended to boil their water before using it, but it is not required.

The town says the break is contained and the road remains closed while they make repairs. The system pressure advisory will be in place until at least 3 a.m
