Durham's Lula and Sadie's to close after 6 years
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Lula and Sadie's, a restaurant that has spent three of its six years in Durham's Lakewood neighborhood, will close Sept. 20, according to an announcement from the business.
The closure marks a difficult farewell for many loyal customers who say the restaurant played an important role in the community.
"It's almost like losing a member of the family," customer Genoa Haselton said.
Haselton said the restaurant felt like home and reflected the sense of community she values in Durham.
"It was like the soul of being in this lovely community where people connected and cared about each other. That was the beauty of Durham," she said. "The little shops can't afford it anymore, and then it's chains or super high-end, expensive stuff that doesn't feel like home."
The restaurant's closure comes as other small businesses face challenges in Durham. The latest Downtown Durham report shows more than 20 businesses have closed.
Owner Harry Monds said rising operating costs, staffing challenges and reduced foot traffic since the pandemic contributed to the decision to close.
"It's tough given the economy and the way things are right now," Monds said.
Despite continued growth downtown, Monds said he hopes Durham can maintain its local character as he and his staff spend their final days serving the community.
"It's been wonderful. We've been embraced by the community, and we've tried to give back as much as we can," he said. "I do think that, with rents where they are, there will be more chain and corporate-type businesses coming in. But I really hope Durham will continue to have a local feel."
Lula and Sadie's will remain open through Sept. 20.
