SEA ISLE CITY, New Jersey -- A Pennsylvania family is back home with an unusual souvenir from their trip to the Jersey Shore after they found a prehistoric megalodon tooth.

The Bowers family was searching for shells in Sea Isle City when they made the discovery last week.

The father says he noticed something odd stuck inside a rock on the coastline. That's when he called his son over to help pull it out.

The Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center has since confirmed the discovery.

The megalodon was an enormous prehistoric shark that lived in the world's oceans millions of years ago and became extinct some 3.6 million years ago.

Scientists estimate that the largest megalodons may have been about 60 feet long -- the longest carnivorous shark in history.

The family says they intend to keep the tooth and keep telling the awesome story that comes with it.
