Officers fire shots during Fayetteville chase; suspect on run

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A police search is underway for a driver accused of trying to run down Fayetteville officers before fleeing after shots were fired Tuesday night in a neighborhood off Frost Drive near Ramsey Street.

Residents described a chaotic scene as flashing lights and gunfire broke the quiet in the community. Bernard Douglas said he was getting ready for bed when he heard what sounded like multiple gunshots.

"It was a lot of guns," Douglas said. "It wasn't like, like pop, pop, like shooting back. No, it was like pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. But you could tell it was like two different guns the way it was going."

Police said the gunfire happened at the end of a chase that began on Country Club Drive near Murchison Road. Officers said the driver was in a stolen vehicle and refused to stop, leading them through the neighborhood, where the situation escalated.

Douglas said he saw the vehicle backing into one of his neighbors' yards.

"I seen them. The car was backing up in a yard back here. If you go look at it, there's a whole bunch of skid marks in it. He then pulled out, started going down the street. The cop blocked the road," he said.

According to police, the driver accelerated toward officers, prompting two of them to open fire. The suspect then ran from the scene.

One woman, who asked not to be identified, said she and her family were startled when someone began pounding on their home.

"There was somebody just banging on our window. There was somebody banging on our door," she said.

She showed ABC11 the door that she believes the suspect tried to enter. She waved down police, and officers instructed her to stay inside.

"We see them running up and down with their lights, handguns, the big, huge guns, dogs, everything. I was like, oh, my gosh. I was like, This is freaking insane," she said.

She said she remains uneasy knowing the suspect has not been found.

"Still still anxious, still very concerned, you know, because it's like, what in the world?" she said.

Police are asking neighbors to check their Ring and surveillance cameras for any video that may help the investigation. No officers were injured, and it is unknown whether the suspect was hurt.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending a complete and thorough investigation into the discharge of their firearms.
