RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- It is an active First Alert Day, and drought conditions persist across much of central North Carolina, with some areas still experiencing severe to extreme drought, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report released Thursday.
The most intense drought conditions are concentrated north of the Triangle, including parts of Person, Granville and neighboring counties. Areas around Roxboro remain in extreme drought, while surrounding communities are experiencing severe drought conditions.
Much of the Triangle, including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and nearby communities, remains under moderate to severe drought.

Dry conditions also continue across portions of eastern and southeastern North Carolina.
Forecasters will monitor rainfall trends in the coming weeks as the region looks for additional rain to further improve drought conditions.
