GoTriangle ridership up 32 percent in April, officials attribute to high gas prices

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- GoTriangle says more people are turning to mass transit. Officials say ridership has been up since the beginning of the year and the increase is being attributed to high gas prices.

There was a 32 percent increase in riders in April compared to 2025 and in March, a 28 percent increase.

"Obviously, we are seeing an increase in the past month of folks, whether they've decided I need to get back into using the bus again or let me try this for the first time," said GoTriangle Spokesperson Eric Curry. "Try transit, try it and see how you may like it . . . Not only will they save money, but the peace of mind not having to navigate on the roads is also a plus."

Several people can ride the buses for free.

The Tap Go Pass offers free rides for adults who receive Medicaid, SNAP or EBT benefits, or have a household income below $35,000.

Residents 65 or older don't have to pay.

There's also a Youth Pass for kids 13-18.
