High gas price cause boaters to 'cut back' on hitting the water

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Odell Pendly is retired and says fishing is a favorite hobby. With high gas prices through, he's making changes.

A full day on the water now will cost the Henderson man $150.

"(I have) cut back on how often I go and try to put it (the boat) in close to where I'm going to fish," said Pendly.

At Rollingview Marina on Falls Lake, a gallon is selling for $5.19.

Evan Wozniak works at the marina and says the price is cheaper than nearby gas stations.

"At the gas stations we're seeing them upper $5's to $6," he said.

Business is starting to pick up at Motorboat Mechanics, although Shop Manager Joe Harasti thinks the economy is slightly having an impact.

"It's been a little bit slower this year," he said. "It's felt slower, compared to last year."

With these rising costs, Rollingview Marina says more people are turning to another option which doesn't require as much cash or commitment.

"More rentals and our Boat Club's expanding as well," said Wozniak. "They just pay a monthly fee, and that gives them access to a boat and makes it feel like they're home."
