
STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, New Jersey -- An investigation is underway after an ICE agent reportedly fired a weapon on Monday morning in Ocean County, New Jersey.
The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Route 72 near Mermaid Drive in the Manahawkin community of Stafford Township.
According to Stafford Township Police, an ICE agent was attempting to take someone into custody when that person fled the scene in a vehicle, allegedly striking the ICE agent.
The agent fired his gun at the vehicle, reportedly striking it, police say. That person fled the scene, and it's not known if that person was injured.
The ICE agent was injured, police said, but it is not known how serious the agent's injuries are.
"Stafford Township Police adheres to the Attorney General's Immigrant Trust Directive and was not assisting or a part of the I.C.E. operation. The ongoing investigation is not being conducted by Stafford Township Police. Our role at this point is to manage traffic and secure the crime scene," the department said in a statement.
