Injured Fort Bragg airman surprised with mortgage-free home in Knightdale
KNIGHTDALE, N.C. -- A wounded Fort Bragg specialist had a surprise homecoming on Friday.
The US Veterans Corps and Garman Homes gifted Senior Airman Demetrious Fitzpatrick a mortgage-free home in Knightdale.
Fitzpatrick was injured in a training exercise at Fort Bragg in January as another paratrooper collided with his parachute.
The two fell to the ground, and Fitzpatrick fractured his spine.

"Any group that gives back to the people who served this country are the exact people, like, they're the reason why we serve," Fitzpatrick said. "Those are the people we want to take care of in America. We don't do it expecting anything in return; we do it because we want to. And the fact that a group of people get together to actually give back to us too is fantastic."
Fitzpatrick will officially receive the home in a ceremony on Sept. 11.
