When nature's odds quickly stack against Jay Gardiner, he will have to fight with both his body and mind to take his next breath of fresh air.

Based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Kraus and directed by Brian Duffield, "Whalefall's" latest trailer shows exactly how treacherous the stomach of a whale is. Jay (Austin Abrams) is attempting to find his late father's (Josh Brolin) remains when he is caught up in an underwater chase, being swallowed by a whale alongside a squid.

With only his scuba gear for light, the whale's stomach walls closing in and air running out, Jay only has one place to turn to for help.

"Son, what are you going to do," the voice of his dad says. "Just accept your fate?"

When the whale dives, Jay dives, having to fight through the crushing pressure just to stay awake. The squid is still alive and just as desperate, and Jay looks like a decent meal. And the clock is slowly ticking down on the oxygen tank.

"Remember, survivors survive," Jay's dad says. "The ocean always provides."

Using his father's wisdom, Jay has to spring into action if he wants to see the surface again.

An old shark tooth becomes a knife. A torn wetsuit becomes a hazard glove. And what once was a hopeless situation turns into a real chance of survival. That is, if Jay is ready for when the whale goes up for air.

"Whalefall" comes to theaters Oct. 16.
