Moore County officials confirm rabies case in Pinehurst area
MOORE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A confirmed case of rabies has been identified in the Pinehurst area.
A Moore County Sheriff's Office Animal Services deputy responded to a home on Magnolia Avenue at the request of the Pinehurst Police Department.
When the deputy arrived, the homeowner reported that their dog had been bitten by a raccoon exhibiting behavior consistent with rabies.
The deputy captured the raccoon and transported it to Raleigh for testing. Test results confirmed the animal was positive for rabies.
Sheriff Ronnie Fields is urging Pinehurst-area residents to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions to protect their pets.
Residents are advised to avoid approaching wild animals that appear sick, injured, unusually aggressive, disoriented or otherwise behaving abnormally. They should also ensure their pets' rabies vaccinations are up to date.
