Deadly shooting at Mac's Speed Shop started with verbal altercation

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- The fatal shooting that claimed the lives of two brothers Saturday evening at Mac's Speed Shop remains an active investigation, but Fayetteville Police said the incident started with a verbal altercation that turned physical before shots were fired.

"For that to happen on this side of town, it's not what we're used to. It's got everybody on edge," said Donnalee Munns. "It's mainly bikers that hang out there that are retired soldiers. There's a Jeep group that also hangs out there and does charity events."

A sign that reads "closed temporarily" is taped to the entrance, and there's shattered glass from a bullet hole on the front door.

Detectives said the investigation is ongoing as they collect videos, search cell phones, and serve search warrants. They told ABC11 that they identified and interviewed numerous people who were inside the business at the time of the shooting.

Investigators identified the victims as Timothy Nakamoto, 43, and Daniel Nakamoto, 45; the brothers did not know the shooter.

"It's kind of crazy. I go there to get my mac and cheese. I love my mac and cheese there," said Malik Williams. "It's wild to go back to the spot like that. Now, it's going to feel weird knowing it happened."

Detectives said a person of interest has been identified, but no charges have been filed. Police are working with the District Attorney's office to determine whether charges are appropriate.

"I pray for everybody that's involved. I pray the workers and staff that were there can recover from this," said Munns.
