Mom charged in young son's accidental shooting appears in court
Court documents obtained by ABC11 allege that the 4-year-old grabbed his mother's unsecured pistol and accidentally shot himself.

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The mother of a 4-year-old boy who Durham Police said accidentally shot himself with her gun made a first court appearance on Tuesday.

Assante Moore, 44, was charged with a felony and a misdemeanor tied to that shooting. Moore is not in custody.

Court documents obtained by ABC11 allege that Moore left a 10mm pistol that she owns unattended inside her home on Greenbriar Drive, and that the boy grabbed It and shot himself.

Moore waived her right to a court-appointed attorney.

She told the court she would hire her own lawyer and is scheduled to appear again on Jan. 20.

The child was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
