Fuquay-Varina to implement water restrictions

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WTVD) -- Another community is imposing water restrictions on residents as the state deals with a severe drought.

New rules begin Friday in Fuquay-Varina.

"Everyone needs to do their part for water conservation," said Fuquay-Varina Public Utilities Director Mike Wagner.

Home addresses with an even number can water yards on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Folks with an odd number can on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

People can only wash their cars at home on the weekends.

Folks with new pools are prohibited from filling them up and those with existing pools are allowed to top them off.

Fuquay-Varina resident Dan Miles was planning to open his pool by the end of the month.

"That would require me to fill it halfway up. So that does take does probably take the probably a good like 3,000 gallons of water," said Miles. "If the restrictions don't go away, that might put a damper on things. Hopefully, like by the time it gets really hot outside, we can get some rain around here, and I can actually open up my pool and have a good summer."

There will be enforcement this weekend in Fuquay-Varina.

"We will have code enforcement, and our staff will be out. But what we want is just everyone to be a good partner," said Wagner.

Town officials said violations will be enforced in stages. The first violation will result in a warning. A second violation carries a $50 fine, and a third violation could lead to suspension of water service.

Fuquay-Varina draws its water from Raleigh, Harnett and Johnston counties.
