More NC towns impose water limits as drought conditions intensify

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WTVD) -- Drought conditions are worsening across Central North Carolina, and more towns and cities are joining Raleigh in enacting water restrictions.

Town of Fuquay Varina officials announced Stage 1 Water Conservation measures will take effect Friday, with the goal of reducing overall water consumption by 10%.

Under Stage 1, people who receive water from the town must follow specific outdoor watering restrictions.

For residents who use automated irrigation systems such as sprinklers, watering is limited based on the last number of the address:

  • Homes with even numbered addresses may water outdoor landscaping on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
  • Homes with odd numbered addresses may water on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Hand watering is allowed at any time, as long as a handheld hose or watering device is actively held while in use. Drip irrigation systems are also permitted and are not required to follow the watering schedule.

Other restrictions

  • No washing down of outside areas (such as driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, building/home exteriors, patios, etc.), unless by a business licensed to do so.
  • Only wash vehicles at home on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • New and existing pools cannot be completely filled.

Town officials said violations will be enforced in stages. The first violation will result in a warning. A second violation carries a $50 fine, and a third violation could lead to suspension of water service.
