DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Tiffany Griffin and her husband, Dariel Heron, launched their candle business nearly six years ago in the basement of their Durham home.

Today, Bright Black, located in the Lakewood Shopping Center, has gained recognition from celebrities such as Beyoncé and Michelle Obama.

The scent shop and studio offers handcrafted home and body scent products, along with opportunities for customers to create their own scents and explore the power of scent through various activations.

"Bright Black takes concepts like a city, a musical genre, or a person and converts them into scent form," Griffin said.

She calls this approach "scent storytelling." All their products tell a story, mostly about Black culture.

"We are unapologetically rooted in culture and blackness," Griffin said. "Durham was here for it."

Bright Black has received major praise from locals and even Hollywood. The business has also been hired by nonprofits, for-profits, brands, policy initiatives, and advocacy campaigns to incorporate scent into their work.

Griffin and her family are grateful for the Bull City.

"We often say we couldn't have started this business anywhere else in the world," she said.
