RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A father's search for a solution to his son's severe eczema sparked the creation of a growing North Carolina skincare company.

Sudhir Shah, founder and chief scientist of Om Botanical, launched the Apex-based company after deciding against the steroid treatments doctors recommended for his son.

Drawing on his background in molecular biology and Ayurvedic remedies passed down from his mother, Shah began developing plant-based skincare products in his kitchen in 2011.

After months of testing, he created a formula he says cleared his son's eczema -- an experience that ultimately led him to start Om Botanical.

Today, the company produces about 40 skincare and wellness products, all rooted in what Shah describes as a "food for your skin" philosophy.

Shah says being based in Apex and the Triangle has supported the company's growth, thanks in part to the region's strong biotech community.

The business has also come full circle. The son who inspired the company has since joined the family business after finishing graduate school.
