RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A unnamed stream feeding into Walnut Creek runs through the North Carolina State Farmers Market, carrying runoff from nearby buildings, roads, and parking lots.

A new feasibility study aims to restore the stream's health and improve stormwater management at the market, according to a news release.

"This impaired stream can no longer support its natural floodplain or a healthy ecosystem," said Susan Evans, chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. "The study will explore ways to restore the stream and create a healthy buffer after years of erosion."

Located in the Walnut Creek watershed, the project will identify methods to reduce stormwater flow, prevent sediment buildup, and incorporate features like rainwater cisterns and bioretention basins.

"Stabilizing the banks will protect the land and provide better access to demonstration farm plots," said State Farmers Market manager Monica Wood.

Starting in November 2025, Kris Bass Engineering will conduct an 18-month study, funded by a $15,250 grant from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. Afterward, the Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District and the State Farmers Market will seek additional funding to implement the study's recommendations.
