North Carolina SBI sends K-9 teams to help with Texas flood recovery

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has deployed four K-9 teams to Texas to assist in ongoing flood recovery efforts in the Hill Country region.

Two teams departed Asheville Regional Airport Sunday morning, and the remaining two teams left Raleigh-Durham International Airport a few hours later. The SBI says the K-9 units will aid in search and recovery operations near Kerrville in Kerr County, where several agencies have recently withdrawn and recovery needs remain urgent.

Four K-9 teams from the SBI are among the dozens helping look for the remains of flood victims in central Texas.

SBI Director Chip Hawley said North Carolina is offering help in the spirit of mutual support among states.

"North Carolina has been devastated by hurricanes and other natural disasters in the past, and our friends from many other states have always come to our aid," Hawley said. "Now it's our time to step up and help them out. It's the right thing to do."

The teams, which are among the SBI's most experienced, will be based in the Kerr County area for the next two weeks. The agency plans to share updates on the mission as the teams work to help families still searching for missing loved ones following the recent catastrophic flooding.

SBI officials emphasized the agency's commitment to serving wherever needed, crediting the support of the North Carolina General Assembly and law enforcement partners for enabling the deployment.
