Pedestrian struck, killed on I-95 in Cumberland County

GODWIN, N.C. (WTVD) -- A person was hit and killed late Tuesday on Interstate 95 near the 66-mile marker in Cumberland County, authorities said.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 10:42 p.m. after a 26-foot box truck hit a person walking along the northbound lanes.

The first arriving unit reached the scene at 10:48 p.m. and found the pedestrian lying between two lanes on the northbound side of the interstate. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, and their identity has not been released yet.

The driver of the box truck pulled into the right breakdown lane and was cooperating with investigators, officials said.

All northbound lanes were closed for nearly an hour while crews worked to secure the scene and divert traffic. Responders later redirected northbound vehicles to Exit 65.

Cumberland County 911 had received multiple reports of a person walking in the roadway prior to the collision, officials said.

The northbound lanes are expected to reopen around 4 a.m.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's Troop B, District 1 is investigating the crash.
