RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Carolina Hurricanes are taking the ice Wednesday night with a bigger goal than hockey, raising awareness about mental health.
The team is hosting a Mental Health Awareness Night as part of the NHL's Hockey Talks initiative, which encourages open conversations around mental wellbeing and aims to reduce stigma. The event is presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.
The game will highlight resources like the Hope Line, and fans will be invited to join in the effort. Supporters can create Hockey Talks signs filled with positive affirmations and encouraging messages. The signs will be shared with players in the fan tunnel and on the concourse.
Every child deserves to feel supported and mentally healthy. That's why we're helping coaches, educators, and community partners, including the Carolina Hurricanes, recognize when a young person may be struggling and know how to respond. Together, we are building a healthier, more connected future for children and youth across North CarolinaColleen Briggs, President of the Blue Cross NC Foundation and Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Blue Cross NC.
Before the puck drops, fans are also encouraged to send supportive messages to players through the Hurricanes' social media pages.
Several community groups will be set up on the South Plaza ahead of the game, as the Canes take on the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7 p.m. at Lenovo Center.
