Boil water advisory in Sanford lifted after bacteria tests negative
SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- UPDATE: A boil-water advisory in southern Lee County has been lifted on Thursday after the latest water samples tested free of bacteria.
UPDATE: The boil water advisory for some Sanford residents issued on Monday remains in effect after a failed coliform bacteria test on Wednesday.
Because of that, TriRiver Water is leaving the boil water advisory in place for now and continuing to flush the system.
All water tests have continued to be negative for E. coli, a TriRiver spokesman said.
ORIGINAL STORY: A boil water advisory is in effect for parts of Sanford.
The advisory applies to Eakes Road, Cedar Lane Road, Hancock Road, Blakely Road, Old Jefferson Davis Highway and Oakleaf Road.
Water samples collected Aug. 8 tested positive for total coliform bacteria. Coliform bacteria are naturally present in the environment and are generally not harmful on their own. However, they can indicate that other potentially harmful bacteria may be present.
Subsequent testing for E. coli came back negative.
TriRiver Water is flushing the system and continuing to test for E. coli and total coliform bacteria.
Another round of samples will be collected Monday afternoon, with results expected Tuesday afternoon. If the results are negative, the boil water advisory will be lifted.
In the meantime, customers in the affected areas are asked to vigorously boil any water for human consumption for at least one minute.
